What are dental fillings?

Dental fillings are specialized materials used to repair fractures or breaks in teeth and to fill cavities caused by tooth decay effectively. If you are experiencing tooth pain or have a visibly broken tooth, it is crucial to schedule a consultation at our office as soon as possible. Our experienced dentists will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth to determine whether a filling or another treatment is necessary to restore your dental health.

What do dental fillings do for tooth health?

Dental fillings are crucial for maintaining and protecting tooth health. They are typically necessary when dental decay forms a cavity on the tooth surface. By placing a filling, you effectively halt the progression of decay, which can help prevent future complications such as pain, abscesses, and more severe issues, including bone loss. By treating tooth decay in its early stages, a dental filling not only aids in healing your tooth but also helps ensure it remains healthy and functional for years to come.

What is the process of obtaining dental fillings?

Obtaining dental fillings involves a few key steps. First, you will see one of our dentists for an examination, which may include X-rays to identify cavities. After confirming decay, the dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic, remove the decayed material, and clean the cavity. A filling material, such as composite resin, will be applied, shaped, and polished to complete the procedure. We will then provide care instructions for proper healing.

What are some signs that indicate that a dental filling is needed?

Here are some common signs you may need a dental filling:

  • A persistent toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
  • Sudden or sharp pain when biting or chewing

When you come to our office, we can evaluate your tooth to determine whether a dental filling is needed to restore its natural appearance. This evaluation may include dental x-rays to assess the extent of the cavity and determine whether additional treatments, such as root canal therapy, may be needed.
